Welcome to SPEA

The Society of Professional Engineers and Associates (SPEA) is an independent union representing over 900 engineers and scientists and 300 technologists and tradespeople who work for Candu Energy Inc. (formerly Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) Candu division) in Mississauga, Ontario and abroad. Formed in 1974, SPEA is one of the oldest professional unions in Canada. Collectively we represent most of Canada's nuclear power reactor design expertise.

We play an integral role in new nuclear reactor builds. In the last fifteen years, hundreds of our members have helped in designing and building new reactors in South Korea, China and, most recently, Romania. Currently we are refurbishing reactors in Ontario (Bruce Power), New Brunswick (Point Lepreau), Korea (Wolseong) and Quebec (Gentilly-2) to extend their operating lifetime. For our refurbishment projects over 100 members have been stationed in the various cities.

The federal government is seeking private partners to run Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd.’s nuclear laboratories in Chalk River, Ont. and Pinawa, Man.

The move follows the government’s sale of AECL’s nuclear reactor business to SNC-Lavalin for $15 million last year.

Ottawa is now seeking companies to “participate in, invest in and/or manage the laboratories,” according to a document on a website for government contracts.

Candu reactor business passes to SNC Lavalin

John Spears Business Reporter

Without fanfare, without so much as a press release, the Canadian public’s ownership in the business of building commercial nuclear reactors ended early this month.

The sale of Atomic Energy of Canada’s reactor business to SNC Lavalin closed on Oct. 2, Lavalin confirmed in an e-mail.

September 14 - The Star - Opinion: Article ignores energy science

Re: Choose green energy: Stop Darlington, Sept. 8

The authors of the opinion piece ignore the fact that Pickering B and its 2000 MW of electricity will be removed from the grid within the next 10 years or so.

They also seem to ignore basic science — i.e. you cannot replace steady electricity provided 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with intermittent sources such as wind power and solar, which have capacity factors of between 25 and 30 per cent. The only way that you can do this is to provide back-up fossil generation 70 to 75 per cent of the time, such as natural gas or coal.

From a greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) point of view it may make sense to replace coal-fired generation with a combination of renewables and, mostly, natural gas. However, it makes no sense to replace nuclear power with mostly fossil fuel since the GHG footprint goes up dramatically.

Germany and Switzerland may be successful in replacing nuclear energy with a combination of fossil fuel and renewables. If they are not, they can always import more cheap nuclear-generated electricity from France, which they currently do anyway.

In Ontario we don’t have that kind of “insurance.”

October 5, 2011 - National Post - Unions: More democratic than big oil or banks

Re: End Union Oppression, Gerry Nicholls, Oct. 3. How is using so-called "forced" union dues for political purposes any different from, say, the Harper government using taxpayer dollars to promote its own political agenda, such as the advertisements touting infrastructure spending prior to the last federal election? Only a minority of Canadians voted Conservative in the last federal election, yet the majority of Canadians are forced to pay for their political messaging through taxes.
Union leaders are, likewise, democratically elected and can be removed during their next elections if members don't like what they have done. Unions are not responsible for the economic mess that much of the world finds itself in. It is the CEOs of the large multinational investment banks that triggered the great recession.
If Gerry Nicholls wants to demonize someone, how about picking the right group?

Society of Professional Engineers and Associates Reacts to Joint Review Panel Recommendation on New Nuclear Build

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Aug. 25, 2011) - "The Joint Review Panel (JRP) recommending approval of the application by Ontario Power Generation (OPG) for a new build at the Darlington site is a wonderful news," said Michael Ivanco, Vice President of the Society of Professional Engineers and Associates (SPEA). "After a long period of uncertainty we can now start to see some light at the end of a tunnel that will put our members' talent and expertise to use."
