Nuclear facts needed The Edmonton Journal Published: Wednesday, April 15 Re: "Nuclear option far too risky for Alberta," by Randy B. Williams, Letters, April 10. Randy B. Williams repeats a number of assertions made by Dr. Helen Caldicott to argue against potential nuclear development in Alberta. It would be extremely helpful if Caldicott would cite sources for her figures. For example, the suggestions that uranium enrichment is responsible for 93 per cent of the global CFC release into the environment and that the process is "unregulated" are preposterous. The nuclear industry is tightly regulated and monitored, and any release, regardless of significance, is reported. A release of "millions of curies of radiation," which Caldicott appears to view as "normal," would trigger an immediate response from national and international organizations.
Albertans are entitled to honest information so they can make an informed choice on this important issue. While Al Gore has occasionally been proven wrong, his identification of nuclear as a cleaner source of power will stand the test of time.
